Weapon Wednesday: Face Ripper

Face Ripper

2-handed exotic weapon. 2d4 slashing damage. 19-20 x2 critical. 8 lbs. 75 gp.

This curved cutting weapon is designed to slice through an enemy’s guard. When wielding this blade, halve any AC bonus your opponent has from the Total Defense or Attack Defensively actions. However, you take a -2 penalty on your AC for one round when wielding the weapon in this manner.

Pathfinder weapon design is always an interesting challenge. You’ve got to make something interesting that gets the warriors excited, but doesn’t deviate too far from the standard weapons everyone understands and doesn’t go off in a broken direction. A warning sign to me is that a lot fewer people visit the site on Wednesdays…is there anything else you’d like to see on here? Anyway, try this on for size.

  1. Well, since you ask, one thing I’d like to see in your weapons is an insight about the culture that made them.

Take this one for instance. It’s a big, cumbersome, specialised offensive weapon, designed for use against defensive fighters. A weapon designed by and for people who want to swoop in, kill quickly and run off before a counter-attack.

That might mean it’s a raider weapon, used by pirates against town guards in some frontier-type place. Or it could be part of a series of weapons used by some army who pride themselves on specialised blades. The soldiers could carry a whole arsenal of weapons for specific tactics. Use this for ambushing an armoured convoy, use some kind of long shield/spear/umbrella contraption for defensive formations. That kind of cameo can spice up a campaign world.

Anyway, my point is a little context can go a long way. Oh, and I like your site. 🙂

    • Hello, hello!

What a great thought! Thanks a swillion for the suggestion. I really like that idea. I’ll just have to figure out how to make interesting cultures that can be slipped into Golarion or any campaign world with little trouble. This would be a great weapon for Scarzni pirates to have developed, or anyone often in conflict against a defensive race.

Thanks Woe, I’ll definitely try that out next Wednesday!
