Weapon Wednesday: Captain’s Cutlass

New Pathfinder weapon!

Captain’s Cutlass

1-handed exotic weapon. 1d8 damage. 19-20 x2 critical. 3lbs. 25 gp.

When you wield a carefully balanced captain’s cutlass, you may add 1-1/2 times your Strength modifier to damage, as if wielding it in two hands. You cannot apply any feats or other abilities to this weapon that require a two-handed weapon, however.

A powerful weapon in the right hands. This weapon can add a consistent boost to your damage. What do you think?

  1. What happens when it’s dualwielded 1.5 and 1.0 without double slice, or..? ((Aside from -2 penalty to hit in addition to other penalties.))

    • Well, for one thing, you would take a -4/-4, because this is not a light weapon.

With Double Slice, I think for starters I wold rule that the Captain’s Cutlass only gets its effect in the main hand, as the off-hand can’t take advantage of its weighty design as effectively.

That said…this cutlass might be overpowered. The bonus to damage with too little downside makes it outshine other weapons too much, making it the choice weapon for everyone who likes doing lots of damage. Which is everyone.

Since that’s the case, I’m going to have to figure out a drawback to the weapon that makes it either more specialized or more normal in power.
